the first ever NBSS sports camp was a success! i was very glad that most of them enjoyed themselves and wanted to do it again. despite minor hiccups and mishaps, the flow of the camp was generally smooth. Mr Loh did a great job!
i had never been more proud of my soccer boys. Amiru took charge and incidentally, the other Sec 3 boys took turns taking initiative. while the younger ones were constantly enthusiastic about all the activities! other than their organisational skills, i was definitely impressed by their behaviour and attitude. all of them were always on time for activities, formed up in their teams almost instantly and they cleaned after themselves.
personally, the highlight of the camp was the night hike. we went Mac Ritchie Reservoir by the way. i had no idea we were going to walk in the forest. i thought it was merely the outskirts of the reservoir. i was walking with the Sec 1 boys, they were really nervous walking in the dark. Andy insisted on walking beside me, which was really cute. oh, by the way, boys (students) in general are really easier to get along with. earlier that day, i scolded Andy for crumpling the First Aid notes and throwing it at his friend. yet, he chose to forget that incident and walked with me. or perhaps he was just that scared.
anyway, it was pitch dark in the forest. i had my torchlight with me but we were only allowed to turn it on when the leader in front says so. for example, if there was a huge root or a ditch in the middle of the path. of course, there were those naughty ones who insisted on shining the light everywhere. even up in the trees. fortunately, there was nothing out of the ordinary that happened. and at this juncture, i could not help but think of someone who is scared of the dark.
halfway through the route, i realised that it was THE route that i ran during secondary school cross country! i was suddenly very excited and i told Nurhan and Farhan about it. Nurhan being in my form class, naturally was more comfortable with me, asked me on how school cross countries were like a decade ago.
the following morning, the kids had Inter Sports Interaction. a group of my boys remained in the field while the rest, with the other students from other sports cca go around the school trying all the different sports. once again, i was proud of the team that led the soccer presentation. everyone did their part and they learnt valuable lessons. lessons such as working together, giving instructions, managing the audience, decision making and more.
truth be told, my soccer boys are not exactly the most formidable team in the north. i will be proud of them no matter which position they will attain in the tournaments in the coming year. in the short 2 days they were in camp, i really hope they made happy memories with their friends and will remember the important takeaways. it is really amazing seeing some of them grow into smart, resourceful and responsible young men.
